{Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real}~ October 26, 2014

I neglected to take a single picture this week!  I almost gave up on having anything to post for {phfr} when it occurred to me that instead of pictures, I'd post some favorite quotations appropriate for each category.  So, from my commonplace book~

{Pretty}

"We are needy creatures, and our greatest need is for home~ the place where we are, where we find protection and love.  We achieve this home through representations of our own belonging, not alone but in conjunction with others.  All our attempts to make our surroundings look right~ through decorating, arranging, creating~ are attempts to extend a welcome to ourselves and to those whom we love."~ Roger Scruton

{Happy}

"I am still determined to be cheerful and happy, in whatever situation may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions and not upon our circumstances."~ Martha Washington

{Funny}

"The drowsy stillness of the afternoon was shattered by what sounded to his strained senses like G.K. Chesterton falling on a sheet of tin."~ P.G. Wodehouse

{Real}

"In living and moving and having something of our being in a home culture, even with its all-too-human fuss and bother, if we but smuggle in something of the simple cargo-sturdy, comfortable furniture, fresh food, home-cooked meals, good wine, one set of fine china for special meals, paintings and ancestral portraits on the wall, an old upright piano, acoustic guitar, any non-electric instrument, a time set apart to read aloud before prayers and bedtime~ if we but make a welcome hearth for the songs of the Muses, we too will know that even on this earth, now and again, a courage will visit among us in those comforting, beautiful reflections of the permanent things, quite surprising yet strangely familiar for us who are passing to and fro in these playful shadows, and we will begin to see as Odysseus recognized, 'something very much like perfection.'"~ James S. Taylor

The obligatory picture (though this one is from a month ago)

{Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real}~ October 19, 2014

Whew!  The past two weeks have been a whirlwind with a trip to Ft. Wayne, IN, for the Lutheranism and the Classics conference followed hard on the heals with a family gathering and not long after that a visit from out-of-town friends.  It was fun and worthwhile but exhausting!

{Pretty}

Yesterday we took the long way home from visiting my mother-in-law.  It was a gorgeous day perfect for a drive in the country.  Dave is vaguely familiar with the area and also possesses an excellent sense of direction, and even though he didn't know the exact way to go, he just kept us pointing in the right general direction and we eventually came out in a recognizable spot.  In the meantime, our route took us along the Missouri River.  Such beautiful scenery!

Here, the bluffs were on our right and the river on the left.

More signs of fall~

{Happy}

One day last week it was cool enough for a fire.  That is definitely a {happy}!

{Funny}

We parked our Sonata next to this Rondo.  Aren't we amusing?

{Real}

I've got a headstart on Christmas presents this year . . . except I had planned to make this stocking for Hannah two Christmases ago!  I made it my first priority this year and finished it in plenty of time.  But alas, nothing is perfect in this imperfect world.  Notice anything wrong?

Now do you?

Yes, the presents on the cuff are upside down., despite me doing all kinds of mental gyrations to be sure that wouldn't happen.  Evidently, I forgot a step.  *sigh*  You know how Mennonite girls will purposely put a wrong stitch in their needlework so it won't be perfect since only God is perfect?  I'll never have to do that.  I'm plenty imperfect without even trying . . .

Thanks for visiting!  Go to Like Mother, Like Daughter for more {phfr}!

Beauty Around the House

This fall wreath matches the front door perfectly!

I gotta have a pumpkin in the fall.

The drawer liner is a vinyl tablecloth I cut up.  I bought it on
clearance for $2 after gasping at the price of real drawer liner.
This is much cheaper and prettier!

Zinnias

Zinnias are such rewarding flowers!  They are easy to grow from seed, they flourish even with abject neglect once germinated, and then t...
